Animal Control

In Baldwin City, Animal Control issues are handled through the City's Police Department. Those citizens within the Baldwin City limits experiencing issues with domestic animals are encouraged to call Baldwin City's Police Department at 785-594-3850 to make a report. After hours, call the Douglas County Sheriff's non-emergency line, 785-843-0250 to request that an officer be dispatched to the location. In case of emergency, of course, dial 911.

Baldwin City prohibits letting animals run at large. In general, stray dogs and cats are collected by the police department personnel on duty. If a dog has a Baldwin City tag, the city staff will make an attempt to contact the owner. All dog owners in Baldwin City are required to obtain a dog tag from City Hall by January 31 of each year. The cost is $10, which is reduced to $5 if the animal is spayed or neutered.

When an owner cannot be contacted, or the animal has no tag, the animal will be taken to the Baldwin City Companion Animal Hospital at 504 Ames. The animal will be housed there for 2-4 days, and if unclaimed in that time will be sent to the Douglas County Humane Society in Lawrence.

Claiming an animal from the Animal Hospital requires that the owner pay all charges related to the boarding of the animal during its stay.

Reports of wild animals will be investigated by the police department if such animals are a nuisance. Wild animals that invade structures should be dealt with by contacting a local exterminator service.

Unfortunate animals killed on the roadways of Baldwin City should be reported to the Police Department or to City Hall.
