Storms and Power Outages

graphic: storm season & power outages

Storm season is here, and the Baldwin City Electric Crew has a few tips to help keep you safe.

  • If you see a downed line, please do not touch or drive over them. Please contact your utility provider immediately - this could cost you your life.
  • If there is a tree limb in your line or it is arching in a tree please do not try to remove it and do not touch the tree. Call the electric utility immediately.
  • It is a good practice during storms to unplug appliances and electronics due to lighting or down lines.
  • If you have half power and no tripped breakers, shut the main off and call the electric utility. If determined the problem is on the property owner’s side, then an electrician will need to be called.
  • If you decide to install a generator, have an electrician install the proper equipment so it does not back feed electricity past your main and back on the lines. A generator could send power to the transformer and try to power up your neighbor’s services and in the process damage your generator or injure or kill the Lineman that is trying to restore power to you if not installed properly.
  • The City of Baldwin City has two power plants that currently can generate the town. They are not manned 24/7 and are not fully automated. It takes roughly 45 minutes to bring the town back up after an outage, assuming there are no down lines or other issues on the distribution system.
  • The Electric Department takes pride in our Electric System and its reliability. Equipment is not indestructible and Kansas weather is brutal at times, so outages still happen. We want you to know if the power is out the Line Crew and Power Plant Crew are out working on it.

If you have any questions or power problems please contact me at (785)594-6907 or by email ccroucher@baldwincity.gov.

Thank you,
