The solar plant will be located on city-owned property south of the new city public utility building and north of the city’s power plant 2. This plant will produce one (1) megawatt of electricity for the city customers.
Evergy will construct the plant and the city will purchase the energy from the plant for thirty (30) years at a price of 5.6 cents per megawatt hour. Construction will begin early 2019 and the plant will be operational by June or July 2019. The addition of the solar plant will increase the city’s renewable energy portfolio.
When the new solar plant comes online, the city will receive approximately 30 percent of its total power needs from renewable sources including wind, hydro, and solar power. Thus making Baldwin City one of the greenest small cities in the State of Kansas.
